Good Vibes for Endangered Animals
The
assignment for this project was to create a print that addresses a conflict in
the world. My conflict was how majestic endangered animals are and how by
showing them in art could possibly allow people to start to appreciate them a
little more and make a bigger effort to help them continue to survive. Before I
started this project I had a hard time coming up with different things to
incorporate together. The steps that I took to accomplish this were to find a
cool animal that would go with the tree I created. I didn’t really struggle any
aspect of the print because of my ability to alter things for better unity.
This conflict represents the overlooking of thing that matter in the world
because they are forgotten about. The main theme was “Good vibes for endangered
animals”. The tree was partially based on a cover art for a reggae band named
Rebelution who promote good vibes and good times. Unfortunately the awesome owl
represents the forgotten species who are about to be extinct even though they
are some of the most incredible to walk or fly through though this world of
ours. I used a technique I came up with showing details as best as possible but
leaving the background out so that someone could add to it or incorporate it
into another piece. When I was creating my masterpiece I made sure that detail
would be a constant theme throughout the owl. I also used different line
thickness to show the difference between the animal and the tree. The use of
these element s and the principles helped me create visual emphasis by showing
how important nature and its citizens are to the planet. I really enjoyed this
project because this was my first time doing printmaking, bettering my artistic
abilities.

For this critique I will be looking at the print of Adryen R. At First glance the print is a very balanced and even example of what a print can be. The left and right side are an almost even distribution of black and white respectively. Within the left side of the print, the shape of a tree can be seen and within it a cascade of white lines invades the dark space. This, in my opinion, is a beautiful way to relate to the title of the piece “Good vibes for Endangered Animals”. The very random, but contained lines within the tree give a superb visual for the very open idea of “good vibes”. The lines within the tree flow in and out of focus, some are very open spaced and distinguished while other parts of the tree are tighter nit and almost seem to blend together creating, once again, the very calming feeling of flowing through the print.
To the right of the tree, on one of the trees branches, sits an owl. The owl, while still recognizable in its own right, is made up of a conglomeration of shapes very reminiscent of Mimbres pottery. This Owl stands out against the rest of the print as it uses a very different type of line and shape to convey itself. While the tree on which the owl resides is made up of flowing and calm lines, the owl is made up of very sharp, straight, and defined lines. This, once again in my own opinion, provides a nice contrast between the almost everlasting and free flowing nature of the earth (tree) and the very short and defined life of the organisms that reside on it (owl). On top of the contrast between the two, the owl holds yet another layer to be peeled back. The sharp and quick movements within the owl give the viewer a sense of the very unique and unusual life within our world. The more I look at the owl, the more I wonder what others of its kind would look like. Maybe it is the last of its kind, once again reinforcing the title. The owl, however, is not completely different from the tree. Within the belly, or perhaps the core, of the owl, I see that the very flowing and open lines are repeated once again. This gives me the idea that the owl is connected to the tree on a very deep level. Without the earth, the owl could not survive. But without the owl, what purpose would the earth serve? They need each other, and whether or not this was the intention of the artist this print is capable of conveying very poignant and impressive ideas with only two colors and some varying line shape.
While looking at this piece, the only words of advice I would give to the artist would be to work on the thickness of ink as parts appear to be faded within the owl. However this gives me the idea that the owl is beginning to fade away. This adds a very interesting layer to the print and could arguably be said to be intentional. Besides that, this is a fine example of a print and I would hope that others enjoy it as much as I do.
